Following a Facebook Post from Producer/director Matt Byrne the news of the 2012 Adelaide Cast is now available for MBM's SA Premiere production of Hairspray.
"We had a fantastic rollup for Auditions and have managed to cast the entire show," Byrne said. "We are blessed to have David Gauci who understudied Edna Turnblad in the professional Australian production, back in town to put his stamp on the role."
Bryne went onto write that this would be the largest cast he had ever announced for a MBM production. "The leads are fantastic, the ensemble first class and what is particularly pleasing is the casting of a number of wonderful black performers in the show," he said.
Hairspray, based on the 1988 film by John Waters, is a musical by Marc Shaiman with lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman and Book by Mark O’Donnell & Thomas Meehan.
Set in 1962 Maryland, it tells the story of plump teenager Tracy Turnblad, and her dream to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show.
When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight and launches a campaign to racially integrate the show.
Hairspray is a social commentary on the injustices of parts of American society in the 1960s.
Songs include 1960s-style dance music and “downtown” rhythm and blues, from Welcome To The 60s to You Can't Stop The Beat.
"This production will owe a lot more to the original Broadway show than the recent Australian production." Byrne said.
Byrne will produce and direct Hairspray with Rodney Hrvatin as Musical Director and Sue Pole as Choreographer.
After a full on weekend of auditions and a few late nights of Facebook updates and much congratulating the Adelaide cast has finally been announced.
