Interview: Karin Schaupp

Paul and Nicole spoke with Karin Schaupp, internationally renowned guitarist, in the lead-up to her 2 show only concert with Katie Noonan at the Adelaide Festival Centre in May 2011.

 

Karin Schaupp is one of the most outstanding guitarists on the international scene, her playing hailed by the German press as “so perfect, so complete, that it seems like a miracle”.  In her teens she won prestigious international prizes, and is today sought after internationally as a recitalist, soloist and festival guest, making countless television and radio appearances.

 



Karin has released six solo CDs for Warner Music and ABC Classics as well as various award-winning ensemble and orchestral albums.  Recent releases include Spain (2009) featuring concertos by Rodrigo and Bacarisse with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, and Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Romancero Gitano with the choir Cantillation; and Cradle Songs (2010) a collection of lullabies from around the world, all arranged for solo guitar.

Karin’s collaborations have included the ARIA award-winning Saffire, The Australian Guitar Quartet with Slava Grigoryan, Gareth Koch and Leonard Grigoryan; the World Guitar Trio, with Carlos Barbosa-Lima and Christopher McGuire; her duo with recorder virtuoso, Genevieve Lacey; and a new collaboration with the Flinders String Quartet.

Recent performance highlights include 180 performances of Lotte’s Gift written for Karin by David Williamson (including a season at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe), concertos with the London Philharmonic Orchestra (UK) in London’s Royal Festival Hall, the Springfield Symphony Orchestra (USA), the Queensland and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras, and performances at the Goodwill Games Opening Ceremony, World Expo (Aichi, Japan) and Hong Kong Arts Festival.
